PRODUCTION ENGINEERING / WORKING NOTE / 2 MIN
Debugging is a listening exercise
What a production incident can teach us about asking better questions.
An incident often begins with a confident explanation. A deployment happened, a queue grew, an API slowed down. The first useful step is to separate what we observed from what we inferred.
Start with a timeline. Put request traces, consumer lag, database waits, and deployment events next to one another. Look for the earliest change, rather than the loudest alert. A correlation is a lead to investigate.
A good runbook should reduce uncertainty. Record the symptom, the hypothesis, the evidence, and the smallest safe experiment. Include how to reverse the experiment and how to tell whether it helped.
The repair restores the service. The follow-up should improve the system: a more useful alert, a missing metric, a clearer boundary, or a better explanation for the next person on call.
