SYSTEM DESIGN / WORKING NOTE / 2 MIN
In praise of boring backends
Reliability comes from decisions that another engineer can understand.
A backend earns trust through predictable behavior. An API with clear failure modes is easier to depend on than one with a clever abstraction and surprising edge cases.
Start with explicit contracts, sensible timeouts, bounded retries, and observable requests. Introduce a queue when asynchronous delivery solves a concrete problem. Split a service when the ownership or scaling boundary justifies the cost.
Database design deserves the same care as application code. Inspect query plans, name constraints, test migrations against realistic data, and understand the transaction boundary before adding a cache.
Boring is an outcome of careful work. The goal is a system the next engineer can reason about, deploy, and recover without guessing.
